Oh, this is too much fun! Thanks, Mephiston. Now I’m not going to get any work done today.

Oh HELLS Yeah!

Picture a dork boy in absolute bliss! Commodore 64 text games galore!!!!!

All you fucking infants need not apply. There are no graphics. There are no “cheat codes”. There is no option for multiplayer. Hell, there WAS no way to connect to another player’s machine back then! You whiney little fuckers have it so good.

Anyway: Baf’s Guide to the IF Archive.

Black Nova Trader Reset

BTW, I reset Black Nova Traders last Friday.

Play Black Nova Traders

Hey! I reset the Black Nova Traders game. I’ve also improved the scheduling procedure so that it should be pretty consistent. Oh and I put in the code fix so that Ore ports are available as well.

It should be much more fun.

Check it out at Dorky Goodness Black Nova Traders.

Oh, and for the record, I’ve shut down the Alien Assault Wars implementation permanently. Way too many bugs and I’m too lazy to fix other people’s software.

CIV III Trick

I’m playing a game of Civ III as the Russians. I haven’t ever played using an expansionist society and I figured it might be entertaining. I’ve found a neat trick (which may be documented… I never saw it).

If you use your scouts to investigate settlements you NEVER trigger an attack. How cool is that? Everytime I enter a neutral settlement I gain gold, units, or better still, technology. It’s saving me tons of time in the research department.

I’m ever so pleased. I think from now on I’m going to send out a worker/warrior delegation to go and investigate the lands around my cities.

Alien Assault

Just for fun, you can try out the Alien Assault game as well now. Granted, the Universe is only 999 sectors but I think it’s a better game. More balanced certainly.

Alien Assault.

Tradewars - I’m really old.

I’ve always loved the game Tradewars. It’s been a favorite ever since I jumped onto local BBS systems oh so very long ago. Well guess what I found? A PHP clone of Tradewars. Actually, I found two. The first is Black Nova Traders. It’s pretty true to good ol’ Tradewars and I was so enamoured with it that I installed it on The Hedge Maze. Give it a whirl here.

The other one I found was based on Black Nova Traders. It’s called Alien Assault Tradewars. I’ve had a bit of trouble building a universe with more than 1000 sectors so I’m going to hold off releasing my server for now. I’m building a set of routines to manually populate the database and that’s quite the undertaking. To be honest Alien Assault Traderwars is a much better implementation of features. The one feature I REALLY want to have is ship classes. Alien Assault has it. Black Nova doesn’t. Ah well.

Have fun. Let me know what you think.

Ahh! The Holidays!

I am now the proud owner of Firewarrior for the PS2, and I’m pretty happy with it. Visually it’s great; you feel like you’re on a WH40K battlefield. Artillery shells going off; Guardsmen shooting lasguns at you from good positions; running through trenches and bunkers; it’s a nice environment.

Playwise, though, it doesn’t really deliver. It’s a very basic FPS game: you don’t feel nearly as vulnerable as one of your poor 40K models. It takes a steady spray of fire to kill one Imperial Guardsman with a pulse rifle, which kinda kills the credibility of the game as a true simulation of 40K gameplay. Similarly, you aren’t nearly as vulnerable as you would expect to be playing the role of a Tau grunt.

So far, the game has also been pretty much a rail-road from waypoint to waypoint; no free-running through a shattered city trying to find objectives: everything is strictly controlled.

Oh well, not a bad first effort. We can only hope that it makes enough to inspire more GW game titles that offer more freedom and variety.
